The Warm Feeling I Get

One of the first books I remember reading, or having read to me, was The Sailor Dog by Margaret Wise Brown with pictures by Garth Williams. It’s a story about Scuppers, a dog “born at sea in the teeth of a gale,” who has an irrepressible desire to sail the sea. I’m sure The Sailor Dog and other books by Brown like Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny were read to me as bedtime stories. I have no actual memories of that, but the warm feeling I get to this day when thinking about these stories tells me such experiences were a part of my childhood. I’m also sure that’s where my life-long love for reading was formed.
